Sydney’s world-famous New Year’s Eve fireworks are almost here! If you’re planning to head into the city to watch the spectacular display over the harbour, a bit of planning will help make the night smooth and fun — especially if you’re bringing the kids.

Free Vantage Points

Many of Sydney’s best viewing spots are completely free, but they fill up early. Make sure to check opening times, access restrictions, and what’s allowed before you go.

City of Sydney–managed free vantage points include:

  • Observatory Hill Park

  • Pirrama Park

  • Giba Park

  • Embarkation Park

All are first come, first served, so pack your picnic, gather your family, and arrive early for the best views. You can explore detailed maps and entry info on the official Sydney New Year’s Eve website.

What to Bring

Some spots will have food trucks, while others won’t sell food — so it’s always smart to bring your own snacks or picnic.
Alcohol rules vary: some areas are alcohol-free, while others allow BYO or have licensed bars. Check the site details before you head out.

There may also be restrictions on umbrellas, sunshades, or large chairs, so confirm what’s allowed before packing.

What to Expect

Here’s what’s happening across the night:

  • 7:30pm – Smoking Ceremony: A cleansing and unifying ritual by the Tribal Warrior Association.

  • 8:30pm – Pylon Projections: Watch the Harbour Bridge burst into colour.

  • 8:45pm – Welcome to Country: A warm welcome to Gadigal land from Elders of the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council.

  • 9pm – Calling Country Fireworks: A special early show celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

  • 9:15pm – Harbour Lights: Boats shimmer across the water in a magical parade.

  • Midnight – Fireworks Spectacular: Sydney lights up the world with dazzling pyrotechnics from the Harbour Bridge, Opera House, and barges. Tune in to KIIS 1065 for the official soundtrack!
