Just a short drive from Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is running a series of ranger-guided experiences that invite visitors of all ages to discover native wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, Aboriginal culture and the important work that goes into protecting these incredible places.
From hands-on junior ranger programs to nature-based creative workshops, there’s something for every curious explorer.
Rediscover Sydney’s Natural Backyard
Living in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs means we’re surrounded by some of Australia’s most beautiful coastline, but just beyond the beaches lies an incredible network of national parks waiting to be explored.
Winter is one of the best times to visit. The cooler weather makes bushwalking more comfortable, wildlife is often more active, and the parks are generally quieter than during the warmer months.
It’s the perfect opportunity to unplug, breathe some fresh air and experience a different side of Sydney.

Junior Ranger: Bobbin Head
Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park
Children can experience what it’s like to be a park ranger while exploring Bobbin Head through hands-on activities. Along the way they’ll discover local wildlife, make new friends and learn why conservation matters.

Junior Ranger: Creativity in Nature
Royal National Park
A wonderful blend of environmental education and creativity, this program encourages children to create artworks from natural materials while learning how rangers protect native plants and animals.

Little Lyrebirds
Royal National Park
Designed especially for children under six, this interactive experience introduces little adventurers to the bush through imaginative play, exploration and sensory activities.
Dates: 8, 9, 15 and 16 July
Junior Ranger: Ranger Skills
Royal National Park
Kids can develop practical outdoor skills including navigation and bush survival while learning about the many different roles park rangers play in protecting Australia’s natural environment.

These ranger-led activities are about far more than keeping children occupied during the holidays.
