Bondi Beach is famous around the world, but behind its golden sands, rolling surf and internationally recognised lifeguards lies a fascinating history filled with extraordinary rescues, colourful personalities and surprising stories.

From 28 October to 1 November 2026, Bondi Pavilion will host Bondi Lifeguards: Stories from the Vault, a free exhibition offering a rare glimpse into the people, events and traditions that helped shape Australia’s most famous beach.

Presented by Waverley Council, the exhibition draws on the Council’s Local History collection to bring more than a century of professional lifeguarding to life.

Discover the History Behind the Famous Bondi Lifeguards

Today, the Bondi lifeguards are recognised internationally, with their work on Australia’s iconic coastline attracting attention from audiences around the world.

However, the story of professional lifeguarding at Bondi stretches back more than 110 years.

Long before television cameras followed rescues on the beach, generations of lifeguards were protecting swimmers, responding to emergencies and helping shape Bondi’s unique beach culture.

Stories from the Vault explores that history through archival photographs, original artefacts and remarkable accounts of life on the sand.

Visitors will have the opportunity to view historical lifeguard uniforms, newspaper scrapbooks, old duty rosters and a bronze shark warning bell from the 1920s.

Even a historical confiscation book offers an intriguing reminder of how different the rules and expectations surrounding beach life once were.

The Stories That Shaped Bondi Beach

Beyond the exhibition, visitors can enjoy daily local history talks presented by long-standing professional lifeguard Lawrie Williams.

Known affectionately as the Bondi Historian, Williams combines decades of personal experience with his knowledge of Bondi’s past.

His talks explore some of the most extraordinary chapters in the beach’s history, including:

  • The Black Sunday mass rescue, one of Bondi’s most significant lifesaving events.
  • The evolution of swimming, surfing and professional lifeguarding.
  • Famous beach inspectors and their remarkable acts of bravery.
  • Historic restrictions on bikinis and topless bathing.
  • Shark encounters and changing approaches to beach safety.
  • Wartime stories, including the shelling of Bondi during World War II.
  • The scandals, personalities and unusual incidents that have become part of local folklore.

The talks offer a perspective on Bondi that goes far beyond its reputation as a world-famous tourist destination.
