Good news for Eastern Suburbs beachgoers! Coogee and Maroubra beaches have reopened for swimming following temporary closures associated with a juvenile whale carcass at Lurline Bay.
Randwick City Council confirmed on 23 October 2026 that lifeguards had assessed the situation and decided it was safe to reopen both beaches, with some important precautions remaining in place.
Coogee Beach Reopens to Swimmers
Coogee Beach has reopened, with lifeguards advising swimmers to stay between the red and yellow flags.
The decision follows an assessment of the whale carcass, which remains wedged among rocks at nearby Lurline Bay.
Although overnight high tides had been expected to help move the carcass back out to sea, it remained in place.
However, because the carcass is located some distance from Coogee Beach, Council lifeguards determined that swimming could resume under their supervision.
Maroubra Beach Also Reopens – With a Smaller Swimming Area
Maroubra Beach has also reopened for swimming, although access is more restricted.
Lifeguards have established a small flagged swimming area directly in front of the Maroubra Lifeguard office.
Beachgoers are advised to swim only within this designated area and follow any instructions from lifeguards.
Lurline Bay Remains Closed – Avoid the Water
While Coogee and Maroubra have reopened, Lurline Bay remains off-limits.
The juvenile whale carcass is still lodged among rocks, and the immediate area remains barricaded.
Council is urging the public not to enter the water or approach the affected area.
The restrictions are intended to protect public health and safety while authorities determine how best to manage the situation.
What Happens to the Whale Carcass?
Randwick City Council is continuing to work with the Gamay Rangers, La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council and the NSW Government to assess the available options.
Any response will need to consider public health, environmental conditions and the cultural significance of whales to the local Aboriginal community.
Council has indicated that the approach will prioritise community safety while ensuring decisions are made in a culturally respectful way.
Planning a Swim at Coogee or Maroubra?
